A Hidden Farewell from the Gambler Himself
When country music legend Kenny Rogers passed away on March 20, 2020, at the age of 81, fans worldwide mourned the loss of the man behind timeless hits like “The Gambler,” “Lucille,” and “Islands in the Stream.” Yet, few knew that Rogers had left behind a deeply personal song—one he never intended for public release—that would serve as his final goodbye.
Titled “Goodbye,” this poignant track was penned by Rogers' longtime friend and collaborator Lionel Richie. Recorded in 2009 during sessions for Rogers' retrospective album Kenny Rogers: The First 50 Years, “Goodbye” was among several unreleased songs that remained tucked away for over a decade. It wasn't until two years after his passing that the song was unveiled to the public.
A Posthumous Tribute at His Funeral
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rogers' family was unable to hold a proper funeral immediately following his death. Two years later, a private ceremony was held in Atlanta, Georgia, where attendees were presented with a touching lyric video for “Goodbye.” The video featured snapshots of Rogers throughout his illustrious career, concluding with the phrase “Until we meet again…” and the Bible verse John 3:16. This heartfelt tribute provided closure for fans and loved ones alike.
A Legacy Immortalized in Song
In 2023, “Goodbye” was officially released as part of Life Is Like A Song, the first posthumous album curated by Rogers' widow, Wanda. The album includes eight previously unheard recordings from 2008 to 2011, showcasing Rogers' enduring talent and emotional depth. Among these tracks is a rare 2009 duet with Dolly Parton titled “Tell Me That You Love Me,” available on digital platforms and vinyl for the first time. Wanda described the album as a reflection of their life together, encompassing themes of joy, love, family, pain, and faith.
“Goodbye” stands as a testament to Rogers' ability to convey profound emotion through music. With lyrics that speak of parting and remembrance, the song resonates deeply with listeners, offering a final message from the beloved artist.
